USD/TRY rises further after the assassination in Turkey of the Russian ambassador

USD/TRY rose from 3.505 to 3.535 after the Russian ambassador was shot in Ankara. The Russian state news agency reported that Andrey Karlov had died of gunshot wounds. The shooter apparently shouted about Aleppo and Syria.

The assassination took place at an art exhibition in the Turkish capital and triggered a decline in the value of the Russian ruble and the Turkish lira. USD/TRY is now up 0.85% for the day and is approaching last week highs.

The lira remains under pressure and is approaching 3.55. Last week USD/TRY found resistance below 3.55 and pulled back; now the pair is moving toward that area. In Wall Street, the Dow Jones trimmed gains (it was up 0.20%) and US bonds extended the recovery. The Swiss franc and the yen rose modestly during the last hours.
